"Money is not our God!" - Killing Joke

Forgive me, dear teachers...

Written by Hero on 10/01/2009 09:16:00 PM

I don't know why.

I was driving back from work earlier tonight and suddenly I thought of all of you. There is nothing I can say that would be enough to convey how much I appreciate our times together. You may not even remember me anymore for you have devoted decades of your lives over the well-being of countless others. And I am but one of them lucky dols. But, I don't mind. But I do remember all of your faces (and most of the names) and I will keep on remembering as long as Allah permits.

Forgive me dear teachers for not celebrating the 16th of May every year. For I have my reasons. And forgive me for not keeping in touch after all these years. And to some of you, especially those from my secondary years.. forgive me for letting you down in the past.

I wish you could see me now. I wish you could see that I've grown into a successful person, in my own right. I have a wife and I have kids now. And they love me. I don't have that many friends but the ones I have, they are always glad to see me. I just wish you would know and be glad for me. For you are the asbab for what I am today.

Many years back, I saw Richard Dreyfuss, the actor, giving an interview for his role as a teacher in a movie or a TV series. He said something like, "I would be a fool if I were to say that I am who I am today have nothing to do with my teachers." At the time, I thought he was just being nice as he was about to play the role of a teacher (and a damn good one!). But now I truly see what he meant back then. Teachers do shape our lives in ways that, sometimes, you will only realize much much later in life.

Yeah, well. Maybe I am being overtly sentimental here. But I do miss my teachers.. a lot. Appropriately, here goes a declaration. Kinda.

Way.. way back in the late 70s, I was a student of Cikgu Maznah and Cikgu Fauziah of Taman Siswa Muda, UKM. Both are still around. Cikgu Maznah is still in Bangi, I think. I will look for her, insyaAllah.

In the early 80s, I was a student of Cikgu Maria (class teacher standard 1), Cikgu Nasir, Cikgu Zulkifli (Math and BM), Cikgu Asmah Muslim (my class teacher in standard 5 and 6), Cikgu Low (English) and many more.

In the late 80s, I was a student of Ustazah Siti Hawa (Arabic), Ustaz Ashaari (Arabic), Ustaz Hamdi (Islamic Studies), Cikgu Hamzah (Literature), Cikgu Nada (History), Cikgu Norhayati (Math), Cikgu Ismail (Science) and many more.

In the early 90s or more specifically for a one-year stint, I was a student of Cikgu Prem (English), Cikgu Norehan (History), arwah Ustaz Ramli (Arabic and Islamic Studies) and a few others.

Towards the mid 90s, I was a student of arwah Pak Dino SS (Literature), arwah Pak A. Samad Ismail (News Reporting), Encik Abdul Jalil Ali (Creative Writing), Prof. Abu Bakar Hamid (Literature) and a few others.

In the mid 90s until 2000, I was a student of Dr. Ray (Raja Abdullah Yaacob), Pak Wong (Wong Tuck Cheong), Ms. Hajibah (English), Puan Fuziah (Indexing & Abstracting), Cik Salmah (Cataloging), Dr. Zohra (Research), Pak Lah (System Analysis & Design, and my thesis supervisor), Encik Sapawi (MIS), Encik Sharif, Puan Rosnah, Encik Zulkarnain (DBMS, Networking) and many more.

And beginning late 2007 until now, I was a student of Dr. Prem (again.. previously Cikgu Prem), Dr. Hazita Azman, Dr. Noraini, Prof. Saran Kaur, Dr. Subakir, Dr. Marlyna, Dr. Supyan, Dr. Norizan and this semester, I am a student of Dr. Siti Hamin and Dr. Thang.

You are all special to me. Keep on teaching, dear teachers. As for me, I promise you I will work harder to be a better man. A better someone. Someone whom you will all be proud to remember as a former student.

Sincerely yours,
Your Student
