Debriefing Alert: Post Public Lecture
Written by Hero on 5/13/2009 04:33:00 PMThis morning I went to a public lecture in IAIS. The topic of the lecture was "Democracy, Economic Development and Maqasid as-Shariah" and it was presented by Professor Murat Cizakca, an expert on economic history from Bahcesehir University, Turkey. Boy.. it was indeed an eye opener. The good thing about this session was that he not only lectures but each of the participants received a copy of his academic paper on the subject as well. His delivery was concise, clear, honest and without those unnecessary rhetorics that academicians often throw whenever they themselves are not really sure of what they thought they knew.
Anyway.. I will share what I have learned from the lecture with all of you, insyaAllah.
It was a very interesting topic. The democracy aspect of the lecture may be quite provocative to some minds and it is largely influenced by the ideas put forward by Per Ahlmark.
I am particularly interested in the economic development (system, capitalism etc.) and the Maqasid as-Shariah portion which literally translates to "the goals or purposes of the Shariah". Ever wonder what they are? Of course you must have heard of the word "Shariah" -- that is commonly associated to the laws of Islam, requirements, punishments and such. But believe me.. it is so much more and nothing you have ever read (in shitty mainstream media or otherwise) will prepare you for this.
At all times, one should always, first and foremost, grasp the underlying purposes of a concept before one can rightfully appreciate (or depreciate!) it. Do just to yourself and understand what it is all about.
Maqasid as-Shariah, the goals of the Shariah.
Coming soon.. be patient.. (coz I have to report all this to my boss first.. :p)

Prof Murat is one of the leading authority in Ottoman empire. His biggest contention is that even if a full Islamic country like Ottoman can still make mistake, which is a good reminder for all of us
