Annals of Main Bontot: The Popular Culture of Liwat

Written by Hero on 7/03/2008 12:10:00 AM

An old friend called me while I was driving home from work last Monday the 30th of June (my last day working in MidValley). I hesitated answering the call at first, partly due to having to rush back home in Bangi and change into the 60s look for the hippie-themed dinner (for the big boss' birthday) and of course, the lacking of a hands-free peripheral on my part. razz

But I answered the call nonetheless thinking that the friend keep on waiting for me to pick it up. He may have been in some kind of trouble. As soon as he heard my salam, he replied back and said,

Buyong: Tech, kau boleh cakap tak?
Hero: Boleh, aku guna speakerphone. Apa cite?
Buyong: Macam ni. Aku sekarang kat Balai Polis Jalan Travers.
Hero: Hah? Kenapa? eek
Buyong: Aku baru lepas buat laporan polis.
Hero: Laporan apa? eek
Buyong: Aku suda kena liwat laa.
Hero: LOL smile
Buyong: LOL smile

After 3 minutes of hysterical laughter.

Hero: Kau pun? rolleyes
Buyong: Ye la. Tapi dalam kes aku, budak Saiful tu yang liwat aku. smile

Another few minutes of hysterical laughter.

It seems that just about anybody can got liwat these days. It was such a popular word back in the late 90s. Those who were only shitty kids back then wouldn't understand. Most mainstream newspapers would "liwat" on just about anything just to gain readers' attention (which had berbondong-bondong shifted to Harakah and the rest circa 1998 until now) and it backfired hard on Berita Hairan and Utusan Meloya - nicknames given to the two due to their biased nature. I never thought that the word will ever resurface in our news. I guess it's back by popular demand. Something just had to be done to divert our attention from the evil government's failure to withstand the price increase of fuel and other basic necessities. It is that bad, really.

Will there be an Afdlin movie on this? Perhaps with a paraphrase - "Lewat". Let us wait and see.

No, not Afdlin. David Teoh, maybe. Suggested title : "Jangan masuk belakang".
